Rare diseases: SA experts describe our resources and advise primary care clinicians to refer young patients when there are subtle clinical cues, developing over time that just don’t fit into a typical category

Learning objectives

You will learn:

  • Rare diseases expose the inequity entrenched in the South African healthcare system.
  • People who have LSDs and other rare diseases have distinct requirements that differ from those with more common health issues.
  • Sadly, because of the unusual nature of these conditions, patients and their families often encounter many obstacles in obtaining a diagnosis and receiving medical care that may save or substantially improve quality of life.
