Improving early detection and diagnosis of Hodgkin lymphoma in South Africa: A multidisciplinary approach

Rapid diagnosis and referral of patients with Hodgkin Lymphoma (HL) will optimise long-term outcomes for South African patients, despite limited resources, according to SA experts.
Learnings objectives
You will learn:
- Hodgkin lymphoma (HL) is frequently under- or misdiagnosed in South Africa, compromising long-term survival of an otherwise curable cancer
- Hodgkin lymphoma is strongly related to the HIV/TB epidemic. The presentations of the diseases can be similar and they frequently exist together as comorbidities
- It is important to understand the clinical presentation and diagnostic criteria of Hodgkin lymphoma, including its overlap with tuberculosis (TB) and HIV-related lymphadenopathy
- It is important to understand the limitations of fine needle aspirate (FNA) in diagnosis of Hodgkin lymphoma and the importance of excisional or core biopsies
- Clear diagnostic pathways are available that can be followed in both the public and private sectors, and these can be done with limited resources
- Understand the importance of rapid diagnosis and referral of patients with Hodgkin lymphoma to optimise long-term outcomes, and how referral networks and multidisciplinary collaboration between primary care, pathology, oncology and haematology can be strengthened.
