SA experts guide clinicians in the best practice of adapting glycaemic therapy in T2DM to address cardiometabolic and renal aspects

Learning objectives

After reading these case studies you should be able to:

  • Recognise the importance of moving away from a glucocentric approach to type 2 diabetes management towards comprehensively addressing cardiometabolic and renal aspects
  • Identify patients in whom early intervention and treatment intensification or simplification are required to prevent the consequences of macro- and microvascular damage
  • Consider the role of fixed-ratio basal insulin/GLP-1 receptor agonist combinations in certain patients with inadequate glucose control who require treatment simplification, mitigation of hypoglycaemia risk and improved cardiovascular outcomes
  • Recognise and address other factors that may play a role in suboptimal blood glucose control such as burden of treatment, missed injections, injection-site lipohypertrophy, hypoglycaemia, weight gain and secondary causes of suboptimal blood glucose control such
    as hypothyroidism.
