Patient autonomy is to seek the consent or informed agreement of the patient before any investigation or treatment takes place

You will learn:

• To understand the principles of respect for autonomy and its obligations for the clinician – informed consent, truth telling, confidentiality and effective communication
• To explore how a patient having control over his/her life in the context of responsible community and healthcare rights can improve patient outcomes
• To recognise that severity of disease shifts the patients desire for self-autonomy to a reliance on truthful, ethical and expert intervention by the healthcare professional
• To understand the legal framework within which individual, community and healthcare professionals’ rights are judged.
