Learning outcomes

After completing this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Recognise peripartum depression and distinguish it from transient postpartum “baby blues”
  • Identify important risk factors and symptoms during pregnancy and following deliveryUse appropriate screening and clinical assessment to identify women requiring intervention
  • Assess suicide, self-harm and infant-safety risk and recognise presentations requiring urgent escalation
  • Apply an individualised treatment approach, incorporating psychosocial interventions, psychotherapy and medication where appropriate
  • Discuss antidepressant treatment appropriately during pregnancy and breastfeeding using an individualised risk-benefit approach
  • Recognise when specialist psychiatric referral is required and support continuity of care across pregnancy and the postpartum period.
