Polypharmacy in CKD: Drugs to Be Aware of in Your CKD Patient

In this Clinical Lunch Chat, Dr Rust Theron and Dr Shoyab Wadee will work through the everyday prescribing decisions faced by GPs caring for patients with CKD.
Learning Outcomes
After this discussion, participants should be better able to:
- Review a patient’s medication list in the context of their current kidney function
- Recognise commonly encountered medicines that may require dose adjustment, closer monitoring or avoidance in CKD
- Identify combinations of medicines and clinical circumstances that increase the risk of acute kidney injury or other medication-related harm
- Recognise when an apparent deterioration in renal function warrants investigation rather than automatically discontinuing beneficial treatment
- Counsel patients with CKD about over-the-counter medicines, analgesics and complementary products
- Know when medication complexity, adverse effects or deteriorating kidney function should prompt specialist advice or referral.
