The ethical balance between AI and human Intelligence in clinical practice (Clinical lunch chat held on 12 May 2026)

invite

In discussion with host physician, Dr Rust Theron, Dr David Roytowski, neurosurgeon, brings a practitioner’s perspective to the ethics and application of AI in the South African healthcare context

Learning objectives

You will learn that:

  • The use of AI-enhanced technologies requires vigilant attention to ethical issues and it remains the responsibility of the clinician to ensure that patient’s rights to autonomy, informed consent and privacy are protected
  • AI creates opportunities to improve and streamline clinical care with increased workflow efficacy, diagnostic accuracy and perhaps even a reduction in healthcare costs. However, the 4 pillars of medical ethics will require protection and all healthcare providers need to understand where their ethical responsibilities are affected.
